What are you reading lately? I’m enjoying Fall of Giants by Ken Follett. It’s the first part of a sweeping, epic trilogy he calls the “Century Trilogy” about the 20th century. This one begins around 1914 and follows half a dozen or so somewhat interconnected families and groups of people in different locations around the world. Historical fiction is one of my favorite genres, and Follett is loosely covering the events leading up to the Great War. I have never really understood the nuances of why the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand should have been a major impetus for plunging much of the world into war. Whether the author’s interpretation of events (through the eyes of the characters in the novel) is valid or not is for others to decide, I suppose, but I feel as though I am gaining some insight into the politics of the time. The great thing about Follett is that he immerses us in fascinating historical periods while creating believable, very human characters with all their strengths, imperfections and weaknesses. Thumbs up for Fall of Giants! Check it out.
