random thoughts of the day

My work day began in extraordinarily fascinating fashion.  I received a call, out of the blue, from a potential client.  He wanted too know if our firm can do a bond financing for a really interesting project.  Although it is doubtful this will turn into a real deal, I’m excited to have learned about his company and the technology he is trying to develop.  Have you ever heard of thorium?  I’m mildly embarrassed and a bit shocked to say I had not.  Here’s a link to Wikipedia (gotta get this in  before the SOPA blackout):

This stuff is amazing!  Why has there not been more publicity about thorium?  The conspiracy theorist in me thinks Big Oil definitely doesn’t want the use of it to gain traction!  The guy I talked to on the phone told me that one gram of thorium is the equivalent of 7,500 gallons of gasoline if one were to use it to power an automobile, and he claims there is certainly the technology available to do that — and yet, one gram costs only about 84 cents right now!  Think about that for a minute…

His company wants to process thorium and use it to power generators anywhere in size from 5KW to 100MW.  Even though it’s a radioactive, metallic element, it is completely “green”, because it’s safe enough to hold in your hand and can be burned with no harmful emissions.  China and Russia know all about this stuff.  It’s more abundant than uranium (the U.S. has a relatively huge amount of it) and way more energy efficient than fossil fuels.  Here is a link to his company’s website in case anybody wants to read more about it:

I donated blood today.  A couple of weeks ago my iron count was just a bit too low to be able to donate.  Today I feel strong and healthy.  I’m happy I could give!

The kids and I have a fun little game we are doing.  In the evening we show each other random, funny videos that we find on the internet.  It can be anything at all.  Erik and I were watching some clips from The Daily Show, which are always good for lots of laughs.  Erik showed me a video that was hilarious but far too inappropriate for purposes of my blog!

Watching more Downtown Abbey tonight as well — if anything, it’s getting even better as it goes along, and we are only about one third of the way through Series 1.

We finally got some rain today in California!   Once again, it astounds me when people complain about the weather — it’s truly crazy considering no one can do a thing about it.  Just enjoy every day for what it is. 🙂
